Walking Pneumonia?

Has anyone ever had it?

I seriously think I do. . .not trying to self-diagnose or anything. . . I just have no idea what else this could be:

Ever since my bout with the bad cold, I have just been exhausted and still have a horrible cough and feeling in my chest. Today, during 2nd block, I started sweating profusely, even though my room was on the cooler side and I was wear a skirt and short sleeve top. My kids were watching an episdoe of the Simpsons(connects to a short story we read), so I told the SPED teacher I needed to go to the nurse.

SHe took my temp, and it was 97.2---definitely not feverish, even though I thought I was:( I was lucky that the SPED teacher took over reading and such, but the last two blocks were brutal on me!

I have some recommendations for doctors. Everyone is telling me to go, so I guess I'll make a phone call tomorrow morning. :(

Do you have an urgent care in your area? Walgreens and CVS have them here.

I would try to get in asap. My mom has had it several times and she was SO sick. Have you googled it?

Walking pneumonia refers to pneumonia that is mild enough that you may not even know you have it. Walking pneumonia, which has also been called atypical pneumonia because it's different from the typical bacterial pneumonia, is common in teens and is often caused by a tiny microorganism known as Mycoplasma pneumoniae. Like the typical bacterial pneumonia, walking pneumonia can also be treated with antibiotics.

What Are the Signs and Symptoms?

There are many symptoms of pneumonia, and some of them, like a cough or a sore throat, are associated with many other common infections. Often, people get pneumonia after they've had an upper respiratory tract infection like a cold.

Symptoms of pneumonia can include:

  • fever
  • chills
  • <
    li>cough
  • unusually rapid breathing
  • wheezing
  • difficulty breathing
  • chest or abdominal pain
  • loss of appetite
  • exhaustion
  • vomiting
  • <
    /ul>

The symptoms of pneumonia vary from person to person, and few people get all of them.

When pneumonia is caused by bacteria, the person tends to become sick quickly and develops a high fever and has difficulty breathing. When it's caused by a virus, symptoms generally appear more gradually and may be less severe.

A person's symptoms can help the doctor identify the type of pneumonia. Mycoplasma pneumoniae, for example, often causes headaches and sore throats in addition to the symptoms listed above.

Unfortunately, no urgent cares in this county for WHATEVER reason--I relied on urgent care int he last city I worked at for several occasions. ..

I've googled it, and I have some of my symptoms, but there are soo many other possibilities, too! I think the internet is my worst enemy.

I don't know the difference between walking pneumonia and regular pneumonia but I had the regular one last year and it was horrible! my main symptoms were trouble breathing and a high fever for a week on top of all the aches, no appetite, etc. I would def. go to an Urgent Care or Patient First just to rule out pneumonia because if you do indeed have it, you should get on meds right away because it can wipe you out for weeks at a time!

Hope you feel better soon!

I would advise seeing a doctor. It never hurts. I see a doctor for everything....I know I am just a stalker on here, but....just my two cents.

Are you running a fever now? You could go to the ER. I would have on Sunday if they didn't have urget care.

I would be mostly worried about what your O2 levels are. Cuase if you have pneumonia that is the scary thing.

Are you coughing? Is it "productive" or just dry? Do you have any pain in your upper back? That was my grandmother's only symptom.

I had it a couple years ago. I thought I had a sinus infection. However, I had a horroble pain where my spleen is. I thought I had a tumor or something. Urgent Care gave me an x ray, but it didn't show. The doc thought I still had it.

I had a CAT scan for another reason and it showed up as massive on that.

I must have had it for a long time, but I do remember the weekend before I was dx I was in bed with the chills, a horrible cough that I'd had for months, and barely a fever, if at all.

The pain in my lung/spleen and sinus infection symptoms were what sent me to the doc.

They can pretty much tell you have it or not by listening to your chest. At least if they highly suspect it.

I had pneumonia a few yrs ago. I caught it at the beginning stage (thank god) and the doc was able to treat it w/antibiotics. I had the symptoms katie listed, namely severe coughing, trouble breathing, chest pain. I can't recall for sure but I might have had a slight fever too and my body just felt like it was breaking down. I have a weak lung in general and tend to develop bronchitis easily after I recover from a cold (or is it flu). I agree, you should get it checked out. I learned my lesson and there is no benefit to wait. You're just torturing yourself. Take care.

No fever now. . .My cough is dry and hurts---I don't cough all the time, but I do cough. My lungs feel like they have some fluid, but nothing uncomfortable right now. I have a little ache next to my stomach on the right, but that isn't really prevalent. I'm just exhausted, and I go from being super cold to sweating within an hour sitting int he same room. . .hmmmmm.

Definitely calling the doctor tomorrow!

Oh yea, I was standing in class the day before and I felt like my chest/throat tightened, like my turtleneck was way too tight. Scared the heck out of me.

Party Wrecker 911

5 personalities that could ruin your summer soiree -- and how to stop them.

Whether it’s Bill who drinks too much or Jen who drones on endlessly about her misfortunes, our friends don’t stop being themselves when you decide to throw the party of the year. Before you start crossing your friend Bob (and the cast of characters that he drags with him to every party) off the list, pick up a few tricks for making even your most worrisome friends party-perfect!

The Spiller

He’s animated, gregarious, and larger than life -- and it’s one of the reasons you love him so much.

The MO: Put a drink in his hands and he wreaks mass destruction on the walls, window treatments, and upholstery. It’s hilarious when he spills beer on the barstool at your favorite watering hole; it isn’t so funny when he’s sloshed red wine all over your brand-new sofa.

The Fix: It’s summer, so keep the drinks, food, and entertainment al fresco. That way, when The Spiller gears up to tell that story about his drunken fishing trip with the guys, cleanup is just a hose away.

The Clinger

She’s your best friend and needs to know she’s your #1, but having her taped to your side as you’re prepping the eats and trying to greet all your guests is exhausting (not to mention downright annoying).

The MO: No matter how long she’s known your friends, she just can’t resist being at your side all night long.

The Fix: You indulge her 364 days a year, but the day of your party isn’t the time for extreme one-on-one bonding. Take her aside before the party; explain that you’ve got a lot of guests coming and that you need to be a gracious hostess and spend time with everyone. Ask her to invite another friend she can cling to while you’re busy socializing.

The Fish

As in drinks like one. She blended into the scenery during your college days, but she’s becoming an endangered species now that most of you are older and a little wiser.

The MO: She doesn’t show up at the party ready to get completely hammered -- it just happens. The same way it’s been happening for the past eight years.

The Fix: Let’s face it: You’re hosting a party, not an intervention. As Dr. Phil says, “The best predictor of future behavior is past behavior.” So cut down on the late-night drama and ask her to spend the night beforehand. When you see that glazed look come over her, guide her straight into the bedroom to sleep it off.

The Fun Sucker:

Otherwise known as “Debbie Downer.” After a few minutes of her doomsday stories, your guests will be running to refill their drinks or -- even worse -- for the door.

The MO: Incapable of reading signs of distress and discomfort in others, The Fun Sucker’s cloud can darken any room as she extols upon everything from the failing economy to her dysfunctional bowels.

The Fix: Stop her from cornering your guests by keeping the party circulating and the conversation flowing. Make food an event by setting up stations (think pizza or burgers with all the fixings or Southern barbecue with lots of sides). Games of all sorts -- not just athletic ones -- help keep the company and conversation light. If that doesn’t work, take your friend aside and ask her to help you prepare dessert or man the grill. Distract her from depressing your guests!

The Vince Chase:

You know, the guy with the entourage. He might not be as good-looking as Adrian Grenier, but he’s got his very own Turtle, Drama, and E -- and not one of them is a friend of yours.

The MO: He RSVPs for one but always shows up with four or five other dudes. Your bash is just one of the stops on his all-night party circuit.

The Fix: If you want your summer party to be an intimate gathering of very close friends, you might want to think twice about inviting your own Vince Chase. If this is a summer blowout of massive proportions, invite him with the knowledge that he’ll have his posse in tow. The more the merrier, right?

When you plan ahead, any party can be a success, no matter who’s on the guest list. The most important thing is to allow for your friends’ unique personalities and work around them. After all, the point of hosting a summer soiree is to enjoy the company of your nearest and dearest -- with warts and all.
